FRI Description 

The MAHE-FAIMER International Institute for Leadership in Interprofessional Education (M-FIILIPE) welcomed its first group of Fellows in May 2015. The program, under the direction of Dr Elsa Sanatombi Devi, is based at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University in Karnataka, India. M-FIILIPE is open to all professionals committed to improving community health, with a special focus on the South Asian region.  Twenty-four fellows are accepted each year, and the selected candidates have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills through health-related projects that incorporate collaborative interprofessional practice.  

The objectives of M-FIILIPE FRI program are to enable educators and practitioners to: 

  • Apply proven, evidence-based teaching methods and frameworks to enhance learning. 
  • Strengthen interprofessional leadership and management abilities for effective teamwork. 
  • Cultivate cultural competence and commit to lifelong learning. 
  • Align teaching and learning strategies with the real health needs of the community. 
  • Design and implement interprofessional education projects that lead to positive health outcomes. 
  • Build networks within the FAIMER community to collaborate and share best practices.   

Program Description: 

During the two-year FAIMER fellowship, Fellows focus on developing, implementing, evaluating, and disseminating an Interprofessional Education Project (their “project”) supported by didactic sessions informed by the core FAIMER fellowship curriculum (Onsite +online). The fellows will obtain necessary ethical clearance and approvals from the parent institute. Fellows are expected to develop an interprofessional educational project using newer teaching learning models and methods, creative assessment, develop a curricula, program evaluation, etc.  

During Year 1 of the Fellowship, Fellows focus on developing their project with guidance from a Project Advisor, Mentor and their peers, seeking ethical approval (mandatory), and implementation of their project.  

During Year 2 of the Fellowship, Fellows continue to focus on implementation as well as evaluation and dissemination of their findings through formats such as a Project Report and/or an abstract and publication.  

FRI Time Commitment: 

The Fellowship is a two-year long program that consists of five phases. During the Instruction Phase, Fellows are expected to attend face-to-face, onsite sessions for 7 to 8 days in Year 1 and 3 to 5 days in Year 2 of the program.  

Fellows are expected to dedicate between 3 and 5 hours each week during the Implementation Phase for project related work, synchronous sessions, and for online discussions on Moodle.

Eligibility Criteria: 
To be eligible, applicants must fulfill all the following criteria: 

  • Applicant must be affiliated with a higher education institution. 
  • Applicant must have a graduate or professional degree (e.g., medicine, dentistry, alternative medicine, Allied Health, nursing, nutrition, veterinary sciences, agricultural sciences, engineering, humanities, law, social sciences, or management).  
  • Applicant must have a minimum of five years of work experience as a faculty member following completion of their formal academic training.  
  • Applicant must have the endorsement of the institution(s) for the proposed interprofessional education project. 
  • Applicant must demonstrate competence in written and spoken English. 
  • Applicant must have consistent, reliable internet access in a quiet, distraction-free environment suitable for learning during online sessions (eg, not while driving or in transit; not from a mobile phone). 
  • Applicant must currently be engaged in Health Professions Education (HPE) or in teaching within any professional discipline. 
  • Applicants who are currently enrolled in a part-time or full-time Certificate, Diploma, Master, PhD, MD, DMD, or other post-graduate program are NOT ELIGIBLE to participate in the Fellowship.  
  • Applicant must NOT be currently enrolled as a Fellow in any FAIMER Institute fellowship program. 
  • Applicant must provide a CV that is up-to-date and that includes the dates of completion for any post-graduate programs (e.g., PhD in HPE, 2021-2024; MSc in HPE, 2021-2023).
