The International FAIMER Institute (IFI) offers a professional development program in health professions education and leadership to global health educators. FAIMER partners with medical schools and universities to establish FAIMER Regional Institutes (FRIs) modeled on the IFI curriculum and adapted to local contexts. The online IFI is not a prerequisite or extension to the FRIs’ programming. Completion of a Fellowship through either an FRI or the IFI results in a certificate bearing the institute’s name, held with equal distinction and prestige.
IFI Time Commitment:
- Year 1 - has 68 hours of Synchronous Sessions and 35 Asynchronous Assignments
- Year 2 - has 62 hours of Synchronous Sessions and 27 Asynchronous Assignments
Each year of the two-year online fellowship consists of two phases.

Eligibility Criteria:
Faculty from all health professions are welcome to apply. To be eligible, applicants must fulfill all the following criteria:
- Applicant must have a graduate or professional degree in the health professions.
- Applicant must demonstrate competence in written and spoken English.
- Applicant must have consistent, reliable access to the Internet in an environment that is quiet, free from distractions, and conducive to focusing on learning during synchronous online sessions (i.e., not while in transit or while driving; not from a mobile phone).
- Applicant must be currently involved in HPE teaching.
- Applicant must have institutional support to participate in the fellowship, as demonstrated by a nomination from the applicant’s institution.
- Applicant must NOT be currently enrolled in an HPE Master or PhD program, MD program, or any other graduate level program.
- Applicant must NOT be currently enrolled as a Fellow in a FAIMER Regional Institute (FRI) fellowship program.
- Applicants who have completed a FAIMER Fellowship at a FRI may apply to the International FAIMER Institute only if the Fellow is nominated by the FRI Leadership.
Applications for the IFI are accepted from the following categories:
- Open to all faculty in the health professions. Preference may be given to applicants who are meritorious and/or have interesting projects
- Health professions faculty from countries where there are no FAIMER Fellows.
- Health professions schools/universities where there are 1-2 FAIMER Fellow alumni, to build a critical mass (defined as more than two) of Fellows.
- Nominated FRI Fellows endorsed by FRI Leadership.
