Program Description:
Medical and health professions education is currently developing and rising vastly in Indonesia and around the globe. The Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMPHN UGM), as a pioneer in medical and health professions education in Indonesia, anticipates the demands by establishing an international collaboration with the International FAIMER Institute in Philadelphia, PA, United States. FAIMER, a division of Intealth, is an internationally recognized organization that focuses on developing research and scholarship in health professions education. FAIMER Institute and UGM have collaborated to establish the FAIMER Regional Institute of Indonesia for Educational Development and Leadership (FRIENDSHIP) that is coordinated by FMPHN UGM.
FRIENDSHIP is one of 10 FAIMER Regional Institutes and the first in the Southeast Asian region. The other FAIMER Regional Institutes are in India (4 Institutes), China (2 Institutes), Chile (1 Institute), Egypt (1 Institute), and Uganda (1 Institute). FRIENDSHIP will become a center of collaboration between health professions education institutions in Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and possibly Australia and Oceania.
FRIENDSHIP participants, mentioned as FRIENDSHIP fellows, will gain an opportunity to learn more about project management and evaluation, educational leadership and development, and educational research/scholarship. All fellows are expected to establish and initiate a project that is relevant to their interests and needs, to be evaluated and developed in the fellowship program.
During the two-year FAIMER fellowship, Fellows focus on developing, implementing, evaluating, and disseminating an educational intervention (their “project”) supported by didactic sessions informed by the core FAIMER fellowship curriculum.
During Year 1 of the Fellowship, Fellows focus on developing their project with guidance from a Project Advisor and their peers, seeking ethical approval (as needed), and implementation of their project.
During Year 2 of the Fellowship, Fellows continue to focus on implementation as well as evaluation and dissemination of their findings through formats such as a Project Report and/or an abstract.
The FRIENDSHIP program is conducted over 2 years using a blended learning model to incorporate 6 milestones:
- Pre-institute orientation and community building (synchronous online sessions)
- FRIENDSHIP Residential session for Year 1 called the “Instruction Phase”- (face-to-face onsite, 7 days)
- FRIENDSHIP Distance Learning for Year 1 called the “Implementation Phase” (online learning with synchronous and asynchronous sessions, 11 months)
- FRIENDSHIP Residential session for Year 2 called the “Instruction Phase”- (face-to-face onsite, 7 days)
- FRIENDSHIP Distance Learning for Year 2 called the “Implementation Phase” (online learning with synchronous and asynchronous sessions, 11 months)
- Onsite Graduation and convocation ceremony for FRIENDSHIP FAIMER Fellows
Another option applicants may consider is the combined Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) and Fellow of FAIMER Regional Institute of Indonesia (FFRI) program:
The Master Program in Medical and Health Professions Education (MHPE) in FMPHN UGM also offers a program in conjunction with FRIENDSHIP the Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) + Fellow of FAIMER Regional Institute of Indonesia (FFRI) program.
